"Vasil Babamov is the Editor of the Chemical Abstracts Thesaurus.  He oversees the development of the Thesaurus, which currently has about 15,000 preferred terms, and its integration into the building of the CA database.

A particularly concern is the implications that the expanded networked applications of thesauri will have on the development of the thesaurus structure and content to ensure that the thesaurus remains a useful tool for purposes beyond its traditional implementation.  Another concern is with providing networked thesaurus access to the analysts involved in building the database and maximizing the benefits of using the thesaurus in the database building process.  The CA Thesaurus is presently fully accessible only internally: on STN via the existing STN thesaurus software; via an Intranet web-based hypertext thesaurus tool; and via a couple of internally developed tools that partially integrate the thesaurus into the database building process. We are anticipating incorporating the thesaurus into the public access to the CA database on STN, the web-based STN-easy and Scifinder that provide access to multiple databases, and into other planned CAS products. Additional work needs to be done on the thesaurus to enable automatic backfile search in light of the major changes our vocabulary has undergone. The only public assess to the thesaurus is a restricted version of the internal web thesaurus hypertext tool that provides only a listing of the thesaurus terms. This listing can be accessed at: http://www.cas.org/vocabulary/. Dr. Babamov received a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Illinois in 1977 and was engaged in research and teaching in that field at several universities before joining Chemical Abstracts as a Scientific Information Analyst in 1986." "The Thesaurus Administration Tool (TAT) is a product designed for the multilingual thesaurus administration, particularly for creating new language versions of a thesaurus.

TAT has been developed within the framework of Eurovoc project for the specific purpose of translating Eurovoc into Czech. Therefore its functions are limited and it is not typical thesaurus management software (TMS).

In particular, TAT may be used for::
  • the creation of new Eurovoc language versions
  • the creation of a language version of another thesaurus

Within a limited scope TAT can be used for:
  • Eurovoc administration
  • the administration of any multilingual thesaurus

Limitations of TAT as regards using it as a TMS:
  • long system response
  • limited functions (e.g. insufficient import/export facilities, etc.)

TAT has been developed by DCIT, s.r.o. according to the requirements of the Czech Parliament. TAT is freely distributed and its full version may be downloaded here:

After downloading and unzipping the tat.zip file, run MSARN200.EXE with parameter code.mdb/ini tat.ini.

Neither DCIT s.r.o nor the Czech Parliament will provide any user support or develop TAT further." (Quelle).

"Visualizing subject access for 21st century information resources: the 34th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing / sponsored by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology in March 1997 ; edited by Pauline Atherton Cochrane and Eric H. Johnson. - Champaign, IL : GSLIS Publications Office, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. - 176p. - ISBN 0-87845-103-X: US$30.
Drawn from various communities of research and development in the U.S. and Europe, the speakers provided viewpoints as digital library developers, interface and visualization experts, bibliographic system vendors, cognitive researchers, librarians, and information service providers. Included among the topics at the 1997 clinic:
  • Do the designers of digital library systems envision a role for more traditional library classification schemes and thesauri?
  • What new tools exist to create visual displays of vocabulary choices and term relationships to improve browsing and search negotiation in either collections of full-text information orinformation surrogate files on the Internet, CD-ROM, etc.?
  • Have cognitive research and user modeling efforts produced results which could impact subject access tool design?
  • What interface, browsing, and navigation tools are on the drawing board or in prototype systems which may help to improve subject access?
  • How will the new systems handle the "interspace" where switching vocabularies will be needed to access and search federated and unfederated repositories of full-text information in various languages?

Papers include World Wide Web URLs that offer further insight into presentations. - [Extract from publisher's notes]"

In this article, we review several novel technologies and implementations that creatively exploit the inherent potential of the digital environment to further facilitate use of e-collections. We conclude with speculation on the functionalities of a next-generation e-journal interface that are likely to emerge in the near future.", 2003

Aus dem Abstract: "...The Java-based general thesaurus browser GenThes is able to handle several heterogeneous, multilingual thesauri. With the General European Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus (GEMET), GenThes is currently being used with several environmental catalogue systems. Feedback from users reveal that this approach greatly facilitates search and retrieval as compared to free-text only search. Performance which is crucial in Web applications as well has been improved by reducing the transfer volume of data and code. The software architecture of GenThes supports easy configuration and adaption to the individual needs of different systems that it is connected to...."
